Jeff Samardzija Expected to be Offseason Priority for Cubbies

The Chicago Cubs and righthander Jeff Samardzija appear to be in no rush to work out a long-term contract.

Once the Cubs completed a seven-year deal with first baseman Anthony Rizzo on Monday, the logical question was whether Samardzija, another core player, would be next. But Bruce Levine of ESPNChicago.com reports the two sides will wait until after the season to re-evaluate their positions.

Samardzija (1-5, 3.70 ERA) agreed to a one-year $2.64 million deal prior to the season and is under club control until the fall of 2015. Levine notes Edwin Jackson is the only Chicago starter with a long-term deal, so signing Samardzija could be an offseason priority.
